Audi S5 Review

The luxury coupe market hasn't always been Audi's bag. Most associate the German brand with solid, reliable sedans. Yet as competitors expand their model lineups to fit what seems like every possible niche, Audi has increasingly started to keep pace by launching more two-door models -- not the least of which is the Audi S5.
True to Audi nomenclature, the S5 is the performance version of the A5 coupe and convertible. That means bigger engines, more horses and a stiffer suspension. The exterior is set apart from its more mild-mannered sibling by a chrome-trimmed grille, quad tailpipes and more muscular bumpers. The resulting package is refined yet athletic, with luxury appointments that ensure comfort matched with a powertrain that won't disappoint.
Current Audi S5
The Audi S5 is available as a coupe and convertible (cabriolet). Both are similarly equipped and feature all-wheel drive, though they have different engines. The coupe gets a 4.2-liter V8 that produces 354 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a six-speed automatic with manual shift control is optional. The cabriolet gets a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 good for 333 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual is the only available transmission. The lighter, more powerful coupe is quicker, but the cabriolet achieves better fuel economy.
The Audi S5 platform is largely based on the S4, its four-door counterpart. But the two-door offers sportier enhancements, such as a longer wheelbase and a lightweight, aluminum front suspension. The front end takes styling cues from the midengine R8 sports car, while the rest of the exterior design comes from the Nuvolari, an Audi concept that made the auto show circuit rounds in 2003. The cabriolet features a sleek soft top rather than a heavier retractable-hardtop design.
The Audi S5 is fitted with many standard safety features, such as antilock disc brakes with brake assist, stability control and traction control. Front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags also come standard. Many luxury-oriented features are also standard. Major options include keyless ignition/entry, a navigation system and a premium audio system.
Inside the cabin, the four-seat Audi S5 is appointed with sophisticated touches, such as finely stitched leather and genuine aluminum trim. The front sport seats offer plenty of space and support, although legroom could be better in the backseat. Audi's MMI (Multi Media Interface) controls the audio, climate and optional navigation systems, and unlike some multifunction controls, is relatively easy to figure out. And although the S5 has the spirit of a sports car, it's still practical enough for everyday life -- the trunk offers a full 16 cubic feet of cargo space, and the rear seat flips down to make even more room.
In our tests, we found the Audi S5 to be an excellent grand tourer. Despite having radically different engines under their hoods, both the coupe and cabriolet feature robust and thrilling performance. The steering feels crisp and the suspension, although non-adjustable, is firm without being gut-busting. Brakes may seem a little touchy at first, but with practice, they feel responsive and firm. Thanks to Quattro, the S5 provides excellent traction in all conditions, making it an ideal choice for buyers living in colder climes. Power is normally distributed 40 percent to the front and 60 percent to the rear, and this helps give the S5 handling characteristics similar to those of a rear-wheel-drive car.
Used Audi S5 Models
The Audi S5 debuted in the 2008 model year as a coupe only. The cabriolet arrived for 2010. That year also saw upgrades to the MMI electronics interface and optional navigation system.

Audi S4 Review

There have been four movies in the "Fast and the Furious" franchise. Dozens of high-performance cars have been featured in each film, yet none of them has been an Audi S4. A grave injustice? Somehow, we think this slighting will suit the typical S4 owner just fine.
Unlike the rather ridiculous cars in the movie series, Audi's S4 is an ideal real-world performance car that delivers high levels of both luxury and performance. Based on Audi's A4 luxury sport sedan, the S4 features hardware modifications that increase the car's capabilities in regards to acceleration, braking and handling.
Throughout its various iterations, the S4 has boasted superior traction thanks to its standard all-wheel drive, understated but handsome looks and an attractive cabin with high-quality interior materials. The availability of multiple body styles is another plus. On the downside, the S4 has typically lacked the crisp handling performance offered by some other competing cars. Overall, though, we hold the Audi S4 in high regard. And rest assured, the S4 won't be appearing in an "FATF" flick anytime soon.
Current Audi S4
The Audi S4 is all-new for 2010, but unlike in previous years, it's only available as a sedan. The convertible version has been replaced by the S5 Cabriolet. The S4 is powered by a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. A standard six-speed manual or optional seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual (S tronic) sends power to Audi's 40/60 rear-biased Quattro all-wheel-drive system.
Inside, you'll find (in true Audi tradition) one of the finest cabins in the sport sedan class. The overall design is demure but classy, and although the center console is rather button-happy, Audi's updated MMI electronics interface is now much friendlier to use than before. The seats are supremely comfortable in the front, offering plenty of support through corners and over distances. Like the A4, the S4 offers a reasonably large backseat should your sport sedan be called on for family duty.
The S4 comes with an ample list of standard luxury features like xenon headlights, tri-zone climate control and leather/faux-suede upholstery. Upgrades include bigger wheels, keyless/ignition entry, navigation, a Bang & Olufsen stereo and Audi's Drive Select adaptive vehicle settings.
The S4 shines thanks to its strong supercharged V6, sharp handling and a forgiving nature made possible by Quattro and its optional sports rear differential. Even driven aggressively, the S4 imparts confidence to the driver. Grip is tenacious and the chassis is communicative. Even so, ride comfort is commendable and cabin noise is pleasantly hushed. Fast, yes; furious, no.
Used Audi S4 Models
The previous, fourth-generation Audi S4 was available in a variety of body styles. The sedan and wagon (Avant) were sold from 2006-'08, while the convertible (cabriolet) lasted from 2007-'09. Relative to third-generation S4s, the fourth generation offered refreshed styling, a revised chassis and a more sport-biased Quattro system, though these changes represented more of a revitalization effort rather than a complete redesign.
Under this S4's hood was a 4.2-liter V8 that generated 340 hp and 302 lb-ft of torque. Power was sent to the Quattro all-wheel-drive system through either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. As with today's S4, this generation model had additional performance-oriented modifications, including a sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels with high-performance tires and more powerful brakes.
Inside, front occupants were treated to a comfortable and functional cockpit. The backseat was more cramped than in the current car, and the electronics systems may seem a bit dated now. The electronics interface, in particular, could be quite frustrating to use with the optional navigation system installed. Leather seating was standard, and interior trim, lighting and controls were all of high quality.
The similar third-generation S4 was offered for 2004 and '05. This was the model that introduced the 340-hp V8 engine and expanded S4 availability to the sedan, wagon and convertible body styles. As with the fourth-gen S4, transmission choices were either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. At the time, the installation of such a powerful V8 in a small car raised some eyebrows, and indeed it boasted more power than BMW's contemporary M3 or Mercedes' C32.
In reviews of the third- and fourth-generation S4, we commented favorably about the car's broad power band, multiple body styles and high-quality interior. Downsides were a cramped backseat and handling that wasn't as razor-sharp as the M3's. The fact that the current S4 no longer has the V8 engine should make these generations a more novel, collectible choice in coming years.
Previous to these newer S4s, there were two other generations of the Audi S4 -- a second-generation vehicle, available from the 2000-'02 model years, and a first generation, available from 1992-'94.
The second-generation model was based on the A4 sedan and wagon of its day, and it came equipped with a twin-turbo 2.7-liter V6 engine rated at 250 hp. Quattro was standard, and Audi offered either a six-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic. In Edmunds' S4 road tests at the time, we found the car very enjoyable to drive, as it struck an ideal balance between outright performance and everyday comfort. Our main complaint about this model was the familiar lack of rear-seat room.
The first-generation Audi S4 was a performance variant of the Audi 100 sedan (later A6) sold from 1992-'94. These S4s came with a turbocharged inline five-cylinder engine capable of 227 hp. Quattro was again standard, and these cars were equipped with a five-speed manual transmission only. After 1994, they became known as the S6. First-generation S4s are a relatively rare find today.

Audi RS 4 Review

Much like the difference between a merely competent steed and the legendary Seabiscuit, there's quick and then there's quick. If you're a driver looking for breathtaking performance in an ultra-performance sport sedan, then there's little need to look further than the Audi RS4. Gobbling distance with ruthless speed and efficiency, the RS4 is endowed with all the traits that leave enthusiasts salivating like babies.
Other German manufacturers have performed like straight-A students in this segment, but the RS4 indicates that Audi did its homework. Ridiculously powerful engine? Check. The RS4 sedan came ready for the smackdown thanks to a V8 that, with more than 400 horsepower, offered more muscle than a WWE cage match — just what you'd expect from a car in this rarefied class. Superior ride and handling? Check. Audi's runner even managed to best the rear-wheel-drive competition by a nose thanks to its all-wheel-drive system. And the RS4's extraordinarily supportive seats meant your back wouldn't ever beg you to plead "time out" from all the festivities.
Downsides? The RS4's compact dimensions added welcome nimbleness, but they also resulted in rear seats that were somewhat on the cramped side. And then there was its rarity, as it was sold for just two years. With patience, though, one will certainly be able to find a used model. Price? Well, it's expensive. But don't let that stop you. Retirement plan, schmetirement plan. An object of desire if ever there was one, the Audi RS4 is the type of sport sedan that puts the fun in reckless spending.

Most Recent Audi RS4

The Audi RS4 sport sedan was sold in North America for the 2007 and '08 model years and was a product of Quattro GmbH, Audi's performance division. (There's some inherent confusion here, as Audi brands its all-wheel-drive system "Quattro" as well.) Essentially, the RS4 was an amplified version of the S4 sedan, itself already a performance variant of the third-generation Audi A4 sold from 2006-'08. Highlights included a higher-output V8, specific suspension tuning with Dynamic Ride Control, modified all-wheel-drive components, more powerful brakes, special 19-inch wheels and high-performance tires. Identifying the RS4 was more aggressive exterior styling, including flared fenders and a unique rear deck lid spoiler. Overall, this super sport sedan had a look that said "performance" without shouting it.
The RS4 came in just one well-equipped trim level. Heated leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and bi-HID headlights all make an appearance on its standard features list. Motivating the Audi RS4 was a high-performance 4.2-liter V8 good for 420 hp and 317 pound-feet of torque; the engine offered 80 more horsepower than you'd find in the S4. Only one transmission was offered: a six-speed manual. Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system made sure the wheels never broke their kiss with the road.
This Audi's cabin placed an emphasis on clean lines. Though there was the requisite supple leather, plushness wasn't the focus; rather, the car's interior championed a pared-down aesthetic that favored sleekness over opulence. The RS4's sport seats looked good and felt good, offering bolstering that cradled you in the corners without ever being too overwhelming. There was ample room for those in front, but rear seat passengers typically found their accommodations a bit cramped.
But of course, this sport sedan was all about performance. At its debut, the Audi RS4 seemed to have a couple of strikes against it. Weighing in at about 4,000 pounds, it was one of the more porcine players in the class. And its design placed the V8 engine heavily over its front axle, compromising steering feel and weight distribution. But somehow the RS4 managed to transcend all this the way a Teflon politician transcends a scandal.
Certainly helping matters was the Dynamic Ride Control system. DRC linked the diagonally opposite front and rear dampers with a gas-charged reservoir to allow more compliance when front and rear dampers were compressed at the same time, ensuring a comfortable highway ride with minimal compromise during performance driving.
In reviews, we found that the RS4's handling was near perfect, with the sort of steely composure that remains undaunted no matter what. Acceleration was explosive, shifts were quick and a broad torque band ensured that there was ample power underfoot for all situations. In testing, we measured a 0-60-mph time of just 4.3 seconds.

Past Audi RS4 Models

It should be noted that although the RS4 was new to the United States when it debuted, there was an older RS4 briefly sold in Europe. Sold for 2000 as an Avant wagon only, it came with a 375-hp, turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 engine.
