What was tested? 2007 Kia Sportage 4x4 ($21,195)

Options: Sport package ($900), floor mats ($85).

Price as tested (including $595 freight charge): $22,775

Have you ever driven an old Kia Sportage?

Gosh, I hope not - unless I don't like you, in which case I hope you're forced to drive one every day for the rest of your long, miserable life.

If you drove an Abrams tank that had been shrunk down to the size of a Harley, it would be much, much more comfortable than an old Sportage. If you strapped two machine guns against your ears and pulled the triggers, you'd almost understand how noisy it was. And after sitting a few minutes in the back seat, you'd beg to get out of the thing even if the alternative was being carried across Africa in a wheelbarrow with a flat tire.

Despite its many downsides, the original Sportage sold fairly well in the early 1990s because it was priced about the same as a pack of chewing gum. And it lasted about as long.

Remarkably, the Sportage name survives today, albeit in a much different form. Today's Sportage has almost nothing in common with the old, tiny, cruddy one, and - strange as it may sound - it's actually an SUV I don't mind driving.

Gone is the old truck-based design. In its place is a roomy and solid-feeling vehicle that's based on a car platform, the same as the stunning Hyundai Tucson.

As a result, the driving feel is smooth, quiet and composed, almost like a luxury car. Its 173-horsepower V6 engine provides enough grunt for spirited driving, and the suspension provides the kind of silky ride usually associated with more pricey cars and SUVs.

Interior dash and seats of the 2007 Kia Sportage Compact Sport Utility Vehicle

In fact, there's only one thing in common with the old Sportage: the cheap-o price. It starts under $16,000 for a stripped-down LX model, or around $19,000 with air conditioning and an automatic transmission. It compares well with small SUVs that cost $25,000-$30,000, particularly in terms of interior space and material quality.

If you're nervous about Kia's quality - as you should be considering the company's long-term record - a couple of things may calm you down. One, Kia's reputation has risen dramatically recently, with better reliability ratings than many well-known American and European brands. And two, Kia offers a fantastic warranty for 10 years/100,000 miles on the drivetrain and five years/60,000 miles on everything else.

Is that enough to make you buy one? Probably not on its own. But when you combine the low price with a long list of standard features, excellent build quality, solid driving feel and Kia's improving reputation, it's hard to ignore the Sportage.

And it's hard to believe it shares the same name with its early '90s ancestor.

Pros: It's a surprisingly good vehicle for how little it costs. It compares well with SUVs costing $25,000-$30,000, or more.

Cons: It's underpowered if you go with the base, four-cylinder engine.

The KIA Carnival has seven seats, one seat for each occupant, 2 +3 +2 configuration. The seats of the second and third rows have an endorsement with adjustable tilt and can be moved lengthwise, folding or extract.

KIA Carnival

The KIA Carnival driving position is broad; though drivers measuring about 1.90 onwards can beat her head with a lump on the left side (hides the mechanism of the sliding door). The same, albeit to a greater extent, occurs in the second row seat behind the driver.

KIA Carnival

The boot capacity, according to SAE, is 214 litres in seven seating configuration. If the two hit the third row of seats, capacity rises to 1,068 litres. The measurement standard in Europe VDA has not been specified for the time being.

The KIA Carnival is available in three versions of equipment: EXI, EXII and EXIII. The least expensive is the EXI, which has wheels 16 "and abundant equipping series: ESP, automatic wipers, automatic lights, the parking aid system and air conditioner, among other things.

KIA Carnival

The KIA Carnival version EXII has wheels 17 "and, in addition to equipping the EXI, electric opening the side doors and tailgate, leather steering wheel, driver's seat with electric settings, curtain covers trunk, previous anti-glare mirror, onboard computer, Direction and speed regulator "VRS".

KIA Carnival

The adjustment has the KIA Carnival EXIII electric version of the passenger seat, upholstered with leather seats and heated front seats. The EXIII Gasoline is also adjustable pedals.

The following are sliding side doors. Both these doors as the tailgate can have a system of opening and closing motorized. This system is very comfortable and easy to use. From inside, the door can be opened from both a button that exists in the amount as a handle pivoting back and forth.

If the door is closed, opens to actuate the handle in either direction. If, during the opening, is activated in the opposite direction, was closed. Whether this mechanism as the gate, if they find some resistance in the movement (because an object or a person is in the journey of the door) are stopped and re-opened.

KIA Carnival

The new KIA Carnival is available with a gasoline engine and one diesel, both of origin Hyundai. The gasoline engine is a variant of the engine that bears the KIA Sportage. It has six cylinders in V, variable distribution, 2.7 litre engine capacity and maximum power of 189 hp at 6,000 rpm. This petrol engine is necessarily a four-speed automatic gearbox (can not have manual gearbox) and equipment EXIII.

KIA Carnival

The KIA Carnival diesel engine is an evolution that takes the Hyundai Terracan. It is an engine four-cylinder 2.9 litre engine capacity, sixteen valve, direct injection through common variable turbocharger and intercooler. Its maximum output is 185 hp at 3,800 rpm. The shifter is a series of manual and automatic is optional (only with equipment EXIII), in both cases has five speeds.

KIA Carnival

There are not many people carriers with diesel engine over 150 hp. The benefits of the new KIA Carnival Diesel are similar to those of other vehicles of this type with less powerful engines.

KIA Carnival

Versions KIA Carnival EXII and EXIII carry a variable steering system that KIA called RSV. With this system, through a button on the dashboard, you can limit the angle of rotation of the wheels to rotate at the top management. Thus, it may have a greater angle when snow chains are not mounted: the new KIA Carnival, if it is equipped with VRS, has a turning radius of 5.5 m to 5.8 m if it is not or merely using this device, the previous model was 6.3 m radius of rotation.

2010 Hyundai i-Flow Concept Diesel-Electric Hybrid Powertrain

The Geneva Motor Show is quite generous in reveals this year, considering the trend of the automotive industry. Hyundai has just presented its new i-Flow Concept on the catwalk, continuing the company’s statement of developing a the “fluidic design”. As Hyundai continues to branch out into new segments, its European operation, which until recently has focused primarily on small cars, is debuting the Hyundai i-flow concept in Geneva. It's a vision of a coming Hyundai that's expected to do battle in Europe's larger D-segment.

The i-flow is the latest concept to wear Hyundai's "fluidic sculpture" design language, and the large D-segment sedan wears it well. Hailing from Hyundai's European Design Headquarters in Russelsheim, Germany, the i-flow incorporates lightweight materials and solar cells from supplier BASF meant to reduce weight and increase energy efficiency.

The i-flow is fitted with Hyundai's first-ever diesel hybrid drivetrain, in which a 1.7-liter diesel engine with dual-stage turbocharging is mated to Hyundai's Blue Drive hybrid system and a new six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. As we understand it, the i-flow is a parallel hybrid, allowing it to be powered by its lithium-polymer battery pack and electric motors, the diesel engine or a combination of both. Combined with a slippery 0.25 coefficient of drag, the i-flow will reportedly return 78.4 mpg and emit 0.30 grams of CO2 per mile.

The new lines give an elegant avant-garde look, helping in the same time in reducing the CO2 emissions to 85g/km and improving its aerodynamics. In collaboration with chemical company BASF, Hyundai produced its first eco-friendly diesel hybrid powertrain, using high-technologies and next-generation materials. The new i-Flow combines perfectly the concept of a little-big car, as it shows a sporty looks but also provides quite enough space due to the use of a minimalistic design for the seats and center console.

The high-tech engine presents the new 1.7-litre engine fitted with 2-stage turbocharging connected to a Lithium Ion-Polymer battery for a more efficient consumption, especially when driven i-flow’s six-speed, dual-clutch transmission. The i-Flow technology is a test bed for new energy harvesting ideas, ranging from flexible solar panel roofing to a thermo-electric generator which uses exhaust heat to produce power. More news of Hyundai’s star cars will be published in advance of the show and will be available on the stand.  The company’s press conference will take place in Hall 1 at 14:15 (CET) on Tuesday 2nd March  (2010).
