Classic Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona

This great front-engined Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona remains one of the most desirable cars.

Ferrari Daytona

TOP SPEED: 174mph

0-60MPH: 5.4sec

ECONOMY: 14mpg

PRICE FOR A GOOD ONE: coupé £300,000, spider £500,000 upwards

Ferrari boss Enzo introduced this beauty at the 1968 Paris Motor Salon. The world's fastest production car, the Daytona had a stretched, quad-cam, Lampredi-designed, 60-degree V12 producing 352bhp. Designed by Pininfarina and bodied by Scaglietti, it captured the imagination.

Driving it is a very special experience, quite noisy and heavy at low speeds, scarily light when you open it up. The engine and transmission are flexible, however, and the accommodation and luggage capacity make it a true GT.

The spider was introduced in 1969 and just 127 were built against 1,285 coupés.

Ferrari 458 Italia

Ferrari 458 Italia
Ferrari has drawn from the visual spirit of the Enzo to create a power-packed replacement for the F430 that shuns the rounded curves of its past V8s in favor of chiseled, unmistakable aggression.

Boasting a new 4.5-liter V8 engine, a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and a 202-mph top speed, Ferrari has revealed that the car--code-named F142 and long rumored to be named the F450--will be called the 458 Italia. Following Ferrari lore, it stands for a 4.5-liter engine with eight cylinders, though why Ferrari thought people would forget it came from Italy is anybody's guess.

The Ferrari 458 Italia will be unveiled on Sept. 8 at the Frankfurt motor show. It has been heavily sculpted for aerodynamic efficiency and has picked up more racing technology than any Ferrari before.

Ferrari claims the engine has the highest specific output in the motoring world. It produces so much power from the all-alloy, direct-injection V8 that its specific output has smashed the old 100-hp-per-liter mark and is pushing beyond even high-output turbocharged cars.

Where Audi's twin-turbo RS6 V10 huffs and puffs its way to 114 hp per liter, Ferrari's high-compression V8 howls out 127 hp per liter.

The high-revving V8 has light internal parts and tiny piston skirts, resulting in low-rotation inertia, a 12.5:1 compression ratio and it rips out 570 hp at an astonishing 9,000 rpm.

No Ferrari road car has ever revved higher and had a higher specific output.

It means that the 458 Italia will be ferociously fast, with Ferrari claiming that it will sprint to 62 mph in less than 3.5 seconds.

While advanced engine electronics are one key to the extra performance, it is also the first rear-mid-engine application of the direct-injection fuel system, which debuted on the front-mid-engine California, and it also runs Ferrari's now-traditional flat-plane crankshaft.

It will be one of the most flexible Ferraris in history, too, with 398 lb-ft of torque arriving at 6,000 rpm. While that sounds peaky, remember that it's only two-thirds of the way up the 458 Italia's rev range and that 319 of those pound-feet will be turning the ultralight flywheel from as little as 3,250 rpm.

Ferrari has clearly worked to produce an engine with a tremendous range of abilities, from record-setting specific outputs to enough torque to surge away from low engine speeds.

The direct fuel injection also helped with Ferrari's environmental challenges, producing a claimed 320 grams of CO2 per kilometer, even though it is faster and produces significantly more power than the 483-hp F430 or the 508-hp F430 Scuderia.

Ferrari that captures a guy's heart

2009 Ferrari California

This softer, gentler Ferrari still has mind-blowing acceleration. If you need to pluck your eyebrows, simply lower the top and race through the gears. The wind will take care of the rest.

The thunder-thighed 2009 Ferrari California flouts tradition with a V-8, not a V-12, under the hood. But the slower metabolism means you get most of the good of a Ferrari in a usable, daily dose.

Whether as cautionary tales or perverse automobile pornography, Wrecked Exotics covers crashes of the most expensive cars in the world. Now the site is getting ahead of itself, sponsoring a contest in which entrants can win $500 for predicting the date of the first crash of Ferrari's new 458 Italia, to be unveiled at the upcoming Frankfurt auto show.

The site has gathered statistics on previous Ferrari crashes, noting that of the 17,300 Ferrari 360s made, there have been 403 documented crashes, or 2.3 percent of the total. For the more recent F430, 96 crashes have been recorded of the 10,000 cars produced.

Ferrari's Massa receives positive medical report

Injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa received a positive medical report after visiting a specialist in racing injuries in Miami and — after minor surgery this week — expects to resume physical workouts as he takes his first step on the road back to Formula One.

An accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix in July nearly cost Massa his life but the Brazilian is hoping to return for the Oct. 18 Brazilian Grand Prix.

On Monday, Massa met with Steve Olvey, a former medical director for CART and a specialist in racing injuries.

Neurological and vision tests came back positive, Ferrari reported on its Web site Tuesday, adding that Massa can resume physical workouts after minor surgery on his cranium. The procedure will be performed in the next few days followed by a brief recovery period.

"I'm very happy with the outcome of the exams," Massa said. "After the small surgery that I will have done in the next few days I can finally start working out a little in the gym to get back in form, and then I can start some kart training.

"When will I be back on a Formula One track? Let's take one step at a time. Right now I'm just focused on starting physical activity again, which is already a big step forward."

Massa's Ferrari ran into a protective barrier after his helmet was struck by a loose part that broke off Rubens Barrichello's Brawn GP car and caused him to lose consciousness. He was hospitalized for nine days in Hungary and placed in an induced coma because of multiple skull fractures.
